For poster 2 the guidelines were "apply principles of color theory, include textual elements (e.g. movie name, director) considering organisational principles of typography and carefully think about signifier and signified"

The Haiku I chose was

"The Darkness descends

nocturnal beast come to feast

craving for lost souls"

First I brainstormed some movie titles ideas. I also use the brainstorm for my poster 1 that included the themes and ideas that arose from the Haiku.

The picture shows the different ideas that I brainstormed from the Haiku. I chose 3 of the my favourite titles; "The Stolen Souls" "Shadows After Dusk" & "The Lost Souls"

After brainstorming for the movie title, I continued onto finding inspiration for my poster. I created a collage of different movie posters that inspired me to create a research mood board.

Then I followed along to find different principles of form and design to incorporate into my poster. I chose to include the rule of thirds, grouping, negative & positive and layers.

I downloaded many different types of typography to create depth and to help explore my ideas better.

I also followed along with colour theory to help with the style of my film. I chose to use mostly reds as "Red is a very hot color. It’s associated with fire, violence, and warfare." (Cameron Chapman, 2010, para. 5). I also create a colour scheme to apply to all of my posters. The type of colour scheme I created is a monochromatic colour scheme. "Monochromatic color schemes are made up of different tones, shades and tints within a specific hue." (Chapman, Feb. 2010). I tried to use the same red colour but with adjustments to create a monochromatic colour scheme.

After, I brainstormed different poster concepts for the 3 movie titles that I decided on.

From exploring poster concepts for each of the 3 titles, I chose to go with "The Stolen Souls" so I created the 3 different concepts that I drew on paper into digital posters to help come up with a final poster.

From the 3 concepts, I created 3 development posters. I received feedback from my concept posters and one of the key points was to delete some of release details as it was too distracting. I decreased the opacity and changed the sizing.

With the use of rule of thirds, I chose to align the different elements to create a visually symmetrical design. I also used different principles of form and design such as layers to overlay over fonts, the scratch, eyes and the fog behind.

From these posters I created my final poster below.

The Stolen Souls

Technique: Photoshop, Digital Illustration

Size: 40cm x 40cm

For my movie poster, I wanted to create a poster for a horror film. The inspiration behind my poster was the retro horror film style. One of my main inspirations I followed along with this movie poster was K-pop girl band, Red Velvet's Bad Boy concept photos (SM Ent. 2018) and music video. I used a similar font and help pulled inspiration from the title. This can be seen from my research mood board above. I like that my poster had the same colour palette and the use of rule of thirds helps create symmetry and a good composition that is easy for the eye to read. Through my poster, I was able to explore into the use of rule of thirds, colour theory, grouping, negative & positive and layers. However, for next time to help improve my poster I would try and incorporate more colours - such as complementary colours to create more depth.
