For poster 1 the guidelines were "create a composition using repetition containing only geometric shape(s) and B&W colour"

The Haiku I chose was

"The Darkness descends

nocturnal beast come to feast

craving for lost souls"

(Kay, 2014)

The technique I chose to use was drawing.

First I started to brainstorm themes from my Haiku.

From my brainstorming, I chose to use the themes of shadow, hidden and growing.

I also followed along using the principles of form and design. I used figure/ground reversible, layers, repetition, rhythm and transparent.

I then chose to use the 2nd concept from the theme shadows.

I created a stencil out of paper to trace over for each of the shadow.

Once I traced all the stencils with pencil, I went over with a vivid to help created a more bold line.

This helped create a more prominent image.

This was the final poster I came up with.

However, I got some feed back from other fellow design students to help develop it.

I got feed back that it was too simple and that I should add more depth to it so I decide to add more elements to it.

I coloured in the first figure black which represents that main figure then for the following shadows behind, I just kept it how it was.

This was the final poster I came up.

Shadows.

Size: 40cm x 40cm

Technique: Drawing

Shadows is a drawing that was created through pencil and vivid. I created this poster through the theme of 'shadows' as I thought it portrayed my Haiku the best because from reading my Haiku, I felt as if a shadow is watching over and when the darkness approaches I becomes night which is when the shadows come out. Which is why I chose to use the figure as black even though shadows are usually black as with positive and negative forms "black as occupiers and white as unoccupied." (Wong, 1972). I used repetition, layers, patterns and negative and positive to help create this poster. Repetition of shape was used - "Repetition of unit forms usually conveys an immediate sense of harmony." (Wong, 2008). I wanted to portray the idea of a figure and the shadows that following along. One thing I struggled was it was hard to keep the stencil still and make all the lines the same which created wonky lines. Next time, I would either use a more strutted stencil or use photoshop to help create even lines.
